MISSION

The mission of square product theatre is to engage in radical acts of inquiry that leave an audience with just as many questions as answers.

WHAT WE DO

For more than a decade, we've created and collaborated on original, honest and innovative works of theatre and performance with local, national, and international artists. We create and produce new works, in addition to presenting innovative productions of existing dramatic texts. We particularly focus on texts that highlight the voices and stories of historically underrepresented populations. We dedicate ourselves fully to the beauty of simplicity and the importance of theatre and performance as a vehicle for communication, relation and change.

square product theatre was founded in 2006 with an eye toward providing affordable, inclusive, professional theatre to the Boulder community. Now in our 16th year, we have presented 20 World Premieres and 14 Regional Premieres of new, innovative performance work, and have showcased our work in Denver, Austin, Chicago, and New York, in addition to our home base of Boulder, Colorado. We love collaborating to create and present new, challenging, and thought-provoking work. We hope you'll check us out.

land acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the land where we make and present our work is within the traditional territories of the Hinóno'éí (Arapaho), Cheyenne, and Ute Nations. Further, we acknowledge that 48 contemporary tribal nations are historically tied to the lands that make up the state of Colorado.

AFFILIATIONS

square product theatre is a proud member of the Boulder County Arts Alliance, the Colorado Theatre Guild, and the Network of Ensemble Theatres.

production history

Dance Nation
written by Clare Barron, directed by Gleason Bauer

Somewhere in America, an army of pre-teen competitive dancers plots to take over the world. And if their new routine is good enough, they'll claw their way to the top at the Boogie Down Grand Prix in Tampa Bay. Dance Nation is a play about ambition, growing up, and how to find our souls in the heat of it all.

July 14-30 in the Black Box Theatre @ the ATLAS B2 Center for Media, Arts, & Performance, University of Colorado Boulder

lightness has a call that’s hard to hear
created and performed by Elle Hong
presented in collaboration with Art Gym Denver

a dance about the chase for utopic levity, and reckoning with the crushing weight of reality. a dance about the GI tract, secrets that are not-so-secret, the letter ‘Y’, and opting for rest in the face of hyper-capitalism … elle wants to show you what it is to be both many things at once and nothing at all.

April 21-23 @ Art Gym in Denver

Everything was Stolen . created and directed by Emily K. Harrison, is a piece created from a variety of stolen and original (but mostly stolen) texts, songs, videos, images and ephemera in an evocation of America (which was also stolen - hey!), inspired in part by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, and in part by something American composer John Cage once said: ‘And so it is out of this chaos, this accumulation of history and novelty, that we begin building.’

March 14 - April 6 at Buntport Theater in Denver

Celebration, Florida by Greg Wohead

Veering between reality and simulation, Celebration, Florida orbits around ideas of surrogacy; a stand-in to replace a person you miss, a re-creation of an experience you can't stop thinking about, nostalgia for a place that perhaps never existed.

January 24 - February 2 at Buntport Theater in Denver
February 6 - 9 at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder

Featuring two unrehearsed performers who have never met. For full list of performers click HERE.
